นิทรรศการ "IMPROVING LIFE: The Design of Swedish Innovations" หรือ "ดีไซน์สวีเดน...ใส่ใจสารทุกข์สุกดิบ" เสนอเทคโนโลยีมีกึ๋นจากสวีเดนกว่า 60 ขึ้น อาทิ หุ่นยนต์ดูดฝุ่นอัจฉริยะที่ทำงานเองด้วยระบบเซ็นเซอร์แถมยังหาทางกลับไป ชาร์จไฟได้เองอีกด้วย หมวกที่ช่วยให้ผู้ป่วยมะเร็งไม่ต้องสูญเสียเส้นผมจากการเข้ารับเคมีบำบัดเครื่องมือช่างล้ำยุคที่ทำให้ชีวิตลูกผู้ชายง่ายขึ้นเยอะจานและข้อนคุณหนูที่ออกแบบเพื่อพัฒนาในการกินได้ โดยวัตถุที่นำมาจัดแสดงล้วนคำนึงถึงเทศโนโลยีขั้นสูง รองรับกับสรีระและจิตใจของมนุษย์ นิทรรศการนี้เป็นความร่วมมือระหว่างศูนย์สร้างสรรค์งานออกแบบ (TCDC) และสมาคมเพื่อการออกแบบ และหัตถกรรมแห่งสวีเดน (Svensk Form) และสถาบันสวีเดน

Introduction

On a typical weeknight in Stockholm, a Swedish mother comes home from work to manage her two children and husband with an army of design technologies. While she cooks, her toddlers eat on splatter-proof dining sets with ergonomic cutlery. A robot vacuum cleans up the living room, finding it's way back to the charging station, while an automatic mower trims the lawn, it's machine quiet as a whisper. In the kitchen closet is a travel potty for women, an essential aid for long winter car drives.

In a hectic urban lifestyle, function is beautiful. "IMPROVING LIFE: The Design of Swedish Innovations" showcases over 60 Swedish design products, ranging from household items to life-saving medical instruments. Ranked as one of the world's most innovative cultures, Sweden claims inventions as diverse as the zip, the safety match, the 3-point car seat belt, colour screen graphics, as well as the innocuous self-aligned ball-bearing-used in roller blades and high-speed trains. In a country of harsh landscapes, true beauty is about utility and practicality.

Vacuum cleaner

Trilobite, the world’s first robotic vacuum cleaner that became commercially available as a mass product. This domestic floor-cleaning robot uses an ultrasonic sensor system for navigation. It is smart enough to return to its power station to recharge itself when batteries are running low. Measuring only 13cm high and round-shaped, Trilobite can make its way under the chairs and other furniture, moreover, it detects and avoids collisions with obstacles. This vacuum takes its shape and name from the extinct marine arthropods, those hard-backed animals which scoured the ocean’s floor.

Vacuum cleaner

The vacuum cleaner made it's entrance onto the world stage at the end of the nineteenth century. Electrolux developed and refined the technology and in 1912 the company launched the first mass-produced household vacuum cleaner. Since then the trend has been towards more and more compact, efficient, and user-friendly machines by means of deliberate product design.

The Oxy3system vacuum cleaner has a built-in closed system which cleans all the air before it is released. No dust particles leak from the nozzle, hose or body of the machine. The nozzle automatically adapts to different surfaces, which makes vacuuming even easier. The Oxy3system is small and simple to ma-noeuvre thanks to a remote control function on the handle, which enables the user to control many of the vacuum cleaner's functions without having to bend down.

An ingenious cut and an overwrap arrangement across the bust makes it possible for a mother to nurse her child, without unnecessarily exposing herself to others or to cold drafts. Child's Plate and Spoon

In the first few years of it's life, a child has just begun to develop motor skills. Whether a child will become right or left-handed will be determined later. For these reasons, the plate and spoon which a small child uses must satisfy some important requirements. BabyBjorn's plate set was developed after a series of studies on the eating habit's of children. The three-leaf clover shape of the plate is attractive, but also provides a functional solution. The corners created in the plate, and the slope of the inner edges allow the child to pick up the food, instead of simply pushing it around in circles. The shape of the plate also makes it more difficult for a child to grab hold of the plate and throw it on the floor. The short handle of the spoon can be used with either the left or right hand, and it's soft shape guarantees that it can easily be emptied of it's contents.

Baby Carrier

The first BabyBjorn baby carrier was introduced in 1973. Discussions of that era emphasized a baby needs to feel the body warmth and heartbeat of it's parents as an important element in the baby-parent relationship. BabyBjorn took these ideas to heart, and further developed their carrier into a commercial success. The carrier gives parents freedom to pursue activities, and offers the child maximum security. It was designed to work inharmony with the parent's body shape and height. Because all adjustments are made from the front, the carrier is easy to put on and take off. Wide, padded shoulder straps distribute the weight evenly over the back, reducing the risk of strain. The entire front portion can be removed, so that a sleeping child can be taken out of the carrier without waking it. The carrier provides firm, secure head support for the child. When the child is older and it's neck muscles have grown stronger, the head support can be folded down so that the child can be carried facing forward.

Rear-Facing Child Seat

It is a proven fact that small children riding in cars in rear facing child seats are safer than children who ride in forward facing seats. In the late 1950's, Professor Bertil Aldman researched car accidents and the safety of children in traffic. Aldman studied the shock-absorbing, contoured seats in which American astronauts lay during blastoff and landing. The forces were distributed evenly over the bodies of the astronauts. Aldman realized that this method could also be used for children riding in automobiles. Children up to three years of age have large, heavy heads relative to their necks, which are relatively weak and unstable. For this reason, it was especially important to provide good support for a child's head in the event of a frontal collision. In the mid-1960's, the rear-facing child seat was put into production, and in 1988, Sweden passed legislation requiring child seats for children in cars. Today in Sweden, rear facing child seats are used for children up to three years old, which has resulted in a dramatic reduction in injuries to children in traffic accidents.

Bicycle Child Carrier

The 1970's saw new thinking in regard to the safety of children in traffic. At the same time, the company Rex Industri worked to develop a safe, durable bicycle carrier for small children that would reduce accident risks. Allowing small children to ride on the package rack of a bicycle was a common but dangerous practice. The child carriers of steel tubing and cloth that were on the market offered little better safety. in collaboration with Swedish industrial designer Carl-Arne Breger, Rex' first child carrier was developed and introduced in 1978. The carrier was molded entirely of orange-colored plastic, with a high back support, rounded braces and edges, and with secure support for the legs. These features have become characteristic for Rex. The Rex child carrier was an unexpected success. Perhaps the best illustration of the success of this product is the number of copies on the market.

Automatic Lawn Mower

At seven kilos, the automatic lawn mower AutoMower is unusually lightweight, making it a perfect helper for lawn work. The durable shell of dark green ABS plastic hides advanced computer technology and sensors that direct the mower where it should mow. The machine is kept within the mowing area by a perimeter cable. it's large back wheels allow it to travel the lawn easily. When it's batteries begin to run down, the mower goes to it's charging station. AutoMower is almost silent as it does it's work, and it gives off no exhaust, making it environmentally friendly. It is also equipped with an anti-theft alarm that sounds if an unauthorized person tries to stop the mower or carry it off.

Hovering Lawn Mower

Flymo, the hovering lawn mower, was developed by Sven Kamph and introduced onto the market in 1953. It is based upon the same principle as a hovercraft. The mower floats above the ground on a cushion of air pushed down by a fan. The blade that cuts the grass doubles as the fan. The cushion of air makes the mower feel weightless, and makes it easy to maneuver. The Flymo Turbo Compact 330 has a compact format for easier use and storage. it's front end is equipped with rollers that make it easier to move. A window in the grass bag shows when it is time to empty the bag of grass clippings. it's unique handle can be set for either right- or left-handed users.

Adjustable Wrench

In the late 1800's, Johan Petter Johansson operated a machine shop in Enkoping, north of StockhoLm. His daily work as a fitter and repairman meant that he had to carry with him a number of different sized wrenches for nuts and screws, a situation which was heavy and inefficient. That was when he began developing a tool to fit all kinds of nuts and screws. In 1892, he made and patented the adjustable wrench. Since the present. Bahco took over Johansson's company in 1914, over 100 million adjustable wrenches have been made.

The Ergo adjustable wrench is ergonomically designed throughout. it's handle permit's a sturdier and more comfortable grip, which makes the wrench well balanced and user friendly.

Hand Tools

Hand tools should not only make work simpler and easier, they should also reduce the risk of hand injury. In collaboration with the Swedish design agency Ergonomidesign, the Bahco Group has developed an 11-step programme. The eleven stages were established using ergonomics as a starting point, and comply with a number of criteria and requirements for the development of modern hand tools with maximal performance. Using this programme, Bahco has produced the Ergo series, a wide range of ergonomic hand tools, a number of which have won prestigious awards in both Sweden and other countries. Several of the solutions used in the Ergo tools have led to a number of patents and registered designs.

Haldex All-Wheel Drive

Most four-wheel drive vehicles manufactured today are equipped either with manual, "on-off" systems or with full time (permanent) four-wheel drive. The Swedish company Haldex has developed a coupling for the new generation of four-wheel drive vehicles that require optimum performance and safety under all types of road and driving conditions. It is a compact, hydraulic unit with integrated electronic controls. It contributes to increased safety by working in cooperation with other car safety systems, such as ABS brakes. The Haldex unit adapts to road conditions with- out input from the driver. In a fraction of a second, the system automatically activates and deactivates for improved driving control in difficult situations such as snow, hydroplaning, etc. The Haldex unit has attracted wide-spread attention since it was first introduced. Volkswagen was first to use it, beginning in 1998. Other carmakers that have adopted the Haldex system include Volvo, Saab, Ford and Bugatti.

Bearings

The function of a bearing is to reduce friction between a fixed and a moveable surface, as well as to carry a load. We seldom think of this when we go roller skating or ride on a train, despite the fact that bearings are vital to both. Although ball bearings have existed since the Middle Ages, the year 1907 is recognized as the beginning of the modern age of bearings. That year, engineer Sven Winquist constructed the first self-aligning ball bearing, and SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken) was established. Wingquist's design was of immeasurable importance for the large industries of the day, and SKF experienced rapid growth. Continual product development at SKF ever since Wingquist's invention has led to new innovations. The Explorer spherical roller bearing is part of a new generation of bearings with increased service life, greater load-bearing capacity and lower sound levels.

Hydraulic Jackhammer

The Cobra mk 1 is a handheld asphalt drill combining technological innovations, market needs, and design. It is equipped with a new, patented anti-vibration system which reduces vibration in the handle to much lower levels. To make the machine even more environmentally -friendly, Atlas Copco has developed a new motor that operates on lead-free fuel, with an integrated catalytic converter which further reduces the motor's emissions. Cobra mk 1's shape is a classic example of high-quality industrial design that has resulted in a user-friendly tool. Controls and information are localized to one panel at the top, and one in the handle. The handle also serves as the fuel tank, and can be raised or lowered to suit the body height of the user.

Welding Helmet with Liquid Crystal Visor

In 1980, Ake Hornell started his own company to develop and sell his invention. His Speedglas@ welding helmet uses liquid crystal technology to automatically darken the visor when the welding arc is struck, and lighten it when welding stops. The invention was soon a commercial success, and it has improved working conditions for welders throughout the world.

Speedglas 9000 is a series of five different models of welding helmets with fixed or variable levels of visor darkness, for use with different welding methods. The helmets have four vents that expel spent air to keep the inside of the helmet cool and dry throughout the workday.

The Adfl o@ battery-powered respirator provides a constant flow of fi Itered air, free from particles and poisonous gases. The respirator has no hoses or protruding corners that might catch on surrounding objects. The user does not need to remove the helmet to change the battery or fi Iter, and battery levels and air flow can be checked via a built-in data display.

Welding Helmet with Liquid Crystal Visor

The Speedglas FlexView welding helmet is designed for work in poorly lit or cramped areas. The visor can be folded up when welding is finished, and the worker can then use the clear lens of the inner visor while performing other types of work that require face protection. The Speedglas ProTop is a special combination welding visor and protective helmet. The helmet is rounded and has few protruding areas, so that it does not catch on surrounding objects, and is suited for various environments.

Functional Work Clothes

The lack of functional work clothes in the 1970's led electrician Matti Vio to design and sell his own. This was the beginning of his Snickers Workwear company. The company continues to develop and design work clothes for trades people and the service and industrial sectors.

The Canvas work clothes collection is made of heavy cotton, with polyester threads that give the fabric it's robust character and hard-wearing qualities. These clothes have reinforced seams and extra large holster pockets for tools. The knees allow the addition of knee pads.

Flexi Pocket is a system of tool holsters and pockets that makes it possible to carry several tools in an ergonomic way. When combined with the harness or yoke, the belt distributes the load evenly to the shoulders and hips. The pockets are removable and can be fastened directly to the clothes, or on a belt to protect the rest of the clothes from unnecessary wear.

Chest Compression Device

A patient whose heart has stopped is given manual heart massage by ambulance personnel. The ribcage is pushed down with force equivalent to 50 kg, 100 times a minute, something not even the most experienced emergency personnel can achieve with consistency. The work is made more difficult by the fact that the procedure cannot be begun during transport to the ambulance, and that it must be carried out in a rapidly moving vehicle. Today only 3% of these patients survive. Lucas is a mobile chest compression device made to increase the likelihood of survival to between 6 and 9%. Assembling it under the patient's back and over the rib cage takes only 15 seconds. Lucas is powered by compressed gas, and it can continue to provide chest compression while defibrillation is performed on the patient. With it's clear colors and organic shape, Lucas is designed to provide a feeling of security and dependability for both it's users and bystanders in an extremely stressful situation.

Pacemaker

A pacemaker stimulates the contractions of a heart that beats too slowly. Today, around three million people have surgically implanted pacemakers that allow them to lead normal lives. In 1958, Arne H. Larsson became the first patient to receive a pacemaker. It resembled a small hockey puck, and weighed 90 grams. Developments since then have led to much smaller, more effective, and more individually tailored pacemakers. At only 3 cm in length, the Microny SR+ is the world's smallest pacemaker, and has a life of about eight years. It is equipped with technology that automatically regulates the stimulation of the heart. This guarantees greater security for the patient, and also extends the life of the pacemaker. The Identity DR is a two-chambered pacemaker that not only stimulates and senses both the atrium and the ventricle, but also helps prevent atrial fibrillation or irregularities of the heartbeat.

Sophisticated audio technology allows many hearing-impaired persons to participate in everyday happenings and live a normal life. Yet there are many other hearing-impaired people who, for various reasons, cannot use conventional technology such as hearing aids. The BAHA@ system consists of a sound processor anchored to a small titanium fixture which is surgically implanted in the skull behind the ear. The sound processor is only 3 cm long, and can be discretely hidden under the hair. It uses the bone as a canal for the transfer of sound to the inner ear, thus bypassing the ear canal. The BAHA system offers a solution for patients suffering from chronic inflammation or infection of the ear canal, or who have deformed ear canals. Because BAHA is anchored to the bone, patients also avoid the headaches, sores and pressure against the skin of the outer ear that may be caused by conventional hearing aids.

Chemotherapy treatment for cancer patients almost always leads to hair loss. Because the hair is extremely important for a person's identity and self image, hair loss is a great psychological burden for a cancer patient. To the surrounding world, the patient's loss of hair is a sign that they are seriously ill. Today, with DigniCap, 90% of chemotherapy patients can keep their hair, improving their quality of life. The DigniCap system consists of two soft, tight-fitting caps of silicon and neoprene which are cooled by liquid. It does not cover the ears, so that the patient can listen to music during the treatment. The procedure is automatically controlled and kept constant by a computer unit.

Dialysis Machine

The diagnosis of kidney failure or reduced kidney function means that a person's kidneys can no longer cleanse the blood of impurities and excess liquid. Cleansing of the blood must be achieved artificially through dialysis. In the process of peritoneal dialysis, the lining of the abdomen is used as a filter for the blood. The dialysis fluid used in this treatment is introduced into the patient's body through a catheter in the abdominal cavity. This treatment is administered around the clock, and thus resembles the function of normal kidneys.

The Serena automated dialysis machine is simple to use and relatively lightweight, making it suitable for home use and travel. The preparations needed to begin treatment have been reduced to a few commands on the screen that lead the patient through several simple steps. Anesthetic Mask for Infants

Getting put to sleep before surgery can be a stressful experience, especially for a small infant. Anesthesiologist Monika Dahlstrand discovered that it was difficult to keep the babies she was about to anesthetize from sucking on the edges of the mask. With more than fifteen years of experience, Dahlstrand realized that the anesthetization of small infants could be made easier for anesthesiologists and less stressful for their tiny patients. Based upon the instinctive sucking reflex of infants, she developed an anesthetic mask with a pacifier inside, directly under the opening for the gas stream. The mask is made of soft, transparent silicon. This material is gentle to the baby's sensitive skin, and also helps guard against hypoxia. When the baby begins to suck on the pacifier, the mask seals against the baby's face, and the anesthetic gas is breathed in through the nose.

Temperature Scale

By the middle of the 1700's, there were numerous thermometers based on different temperature scales. Each scale was recognized and used by one or another country, When Swedish astronomer Anders Celcius began to define a new scale, the need for an international thermometer standard was obvious. Celcius began with two fixed "benchmarks" or standard temperatures, and created a reverse scale, in which the boiling point of water was O ํC, and it's freezing point was 100 ํC. Celsius' great contribution was his detailed documentation of these two standard "benchmark" temperatures. They are reference points that can easily be identified and re-created. Later, the Celsius scale was reversed, and today, it is used by a major portion the world.

High Voltage Motor

The Motorformer is an electric motor that operates directly on high voltage alternating current. It is used mostly in the processing industry and other large-scale plants. The Motorformer is based upon technology developed by Professor Mats Leijon at ABB in the 1990's. The motor can operate on high voltage electricity because it's stator is wound with fully insulated wire. This technology allows the construction of smaller, more compact motors, and reduces the number of components needed in conventional factories that use electric motors. Costs for maintenance and spare parts are thus also reduced. The new motor is also innovative in regard to it's environmental impact. Unlike other motors, most of the materials in the Motorformer can be recycled. The Motorformer lowers a factory's energy losses, which in turn means reduced consumption of natural resources.

High Voltage Generator

During the 1990's, Mats Leijon worked at ABB to develop a new generator technology. The result of his work is the Powerformer, the world's first high voltage generator. This new technology makes it possible to connect the generator directly to a high voltage electrical network without the need for transformers. The efficiency is up to 2% greater than with conventional generators, and produces an increased effect to the network. Mats Leijon broke with conventional wisdom in his field by proving that it was possible to build a high voltage generator.

Powerformer has a number of other advantages that make it revolutionary. Since transformers are no longer necessary, the costs for maintenance, operation and spare parts are lower. The unit is made without PCBs and epoxy, and most of it's components can be recycled.

In broadcasting, the continuous flow of infor-mation has created a great need for smaller, yet dependable communication equipment with well-developed functions for news reporting and documentary programs. IPT Suitcase is a satellite link for TV and Web broadcasts in real time. The link is constructed so that all the equipment, including the folding parabolic antenna, fit's into one case for easy transport to the most isolated locations. The compact size and shape of the IPT Suitcase were designed with the user in mind. All the equipment can be operated by one person with no special training. In the mid-1970's, color television became common in homes, and made black-and-white TVs a thing of the past. Inventor Hakan Lans realized that the same thing would happen with computer screens. Lans wanted to provide computers with this function. Although there was not yet any demand for it, there would certainly be a need.

To create the technology for color graphics, Lans needed a rapid color generator that would guarantee a quality of image resolution that televisions of the day could not achieve. He developed a graphics card that could maintain the background color, while also allowing curves and letters to be transposed upon it. Menus and windows could thus be laid over one another, and be kept intact.

Lans' system was unique and sophisticated, but the major computer companies of the day did not dare to invest in it. They felt that the system would be a luxury item for a limited number of computer enthusiasts. Today, color screen graphics are used by all major computer companies.

AIS System and Transponder

Increasingly, the faithful service that lighthouses have provided for shipping is being replaced by a satellite positioning system called the Automatic Identification System (AIS). This system allows ships and coastal stations higher awareness of their situation through real time information about the position, identity, course and speed of other ships. AIS works even when a ship is behind a peninsula or an island, something which radar systems cannot do.

AIS is based upon technology developed by Hakan Lans, one of the best known inventors of the 20th century. Lans' technology is intended for road and air traffic, as well as ships. AIS was accepted as a world standard in 1998, and is being further developed by Saab Transpondertech.

Industrialist Gustaf Dalen's experiments with acetylene gas led to his brilliant inventions that revolutionized lighthouse technology. These included aga gas storage medium, an intermittent lighthouse lamp, a solar valve, and the Dalen mixer. Together, these devices made it possible for lighthouses to be automatically lit at dusk and extinguished at dawn. Lighthouses became more efficient and less expensive to operate, and contributed to increased safety in ocean traffic during most of the 20th century.

Disposable Sleeping Bag

When disasters strike, it is important that basic measures to help the afflicted can be carried out quickly and effectively.

The DeCell company has developed a disposable emergency sleeping bag for disaster situations. The sleeping bag is intended to satisfy the great need that aid organizations have for simple, functional items that are also relatively inexpensive and can be manufactured quickly in great quantities.

The sleeping bag, for which a patent application has been made, is constructed of double layers of a soft paper-like material with excellent insulating qualities. The material, called Cellsulate, consists of a combination of 85% cellulose fiber and 15% polypropylene. No dangerous gases are produced when the sleeping bag is disposed of after use by burning. Although it may look fragile, the bag can keep it's user warm and comfortable for several weeks, as long as it is not torn on sharp objects.

The Perifi c computer mouse has been designed to make working at the computer more comfortable. Thanks to it's Cshaped ergonomic form, the device can be used either as an ordinary mouse or be slipped over the hand and control the computer wirelessly and independently of the desk. A built-in trackball and dual left and right buttons mean that the device can be operated with either one or two hands. Modern digital technology has created immeasurable possibilities for communication. At the same time, the opportunities for personal and spontaneous expression in messages, letters and memoirs have become fewer.

Anoto-functionality is a high-tech concept uniting handwriting and advanced digital communication. This technology is based upon the concept of giving regular paper digital characteristics. With a digital pen, the user writes a message on paper on which a unique pattern of tiny, nearly invisible dots have been printed. The message is sent as a graphic e-mail, SMS or fax directly to a cell phone or computer. Everything written on the paper is stored in the digital pen. Chatpen, developed by Sony Ericsson, is the first digital pen that uses Anoto Functionality. AXE System

No matter where in the world someone makes a telephone call, the AXE system is probably involved. AXE is an electronic telephone system with computer controlled switching functions that serve as junctions in huge public telephone networks. The system handles everything from voice, images, and data to the most demanding applications within multimedia. The research and development work that led to the AXE system was begun in the 1960's by the Swedish state telephone company, Televerket, together with telephone communications corporation Ericsson. The first AXE station was put into operation in 1978 in a city south of Stockholm, sweden. Since then, the system has been installed in more than 130 countries, and has become the most widely used switching system in the world.

Today, millions of people have access to a variety of telephone services. They can program their telephones for wake-up calls, forward incoming calls to another telephone, program telephone numbers for automatic dialing, or carry on three-way conversations, and more.

Potty and Travel Kit

We all have basic natural needs that must be seen to. The problem is that these needs make themselves felt at the most inconvenient times. Carola Nilstein realized this herself on her travels, in boats, or public places where no toilet was available. Her insight into the need for a practical, easy-to-carry urinal gave rise to the Pipinette potty. Portable urinals have always existed, but the Pipinette was an innovation based upon this old idea. it's neat, oval shape is designed so that women can easily stand while urinating. It is shaped so that men, larger children and persons with minor disabilities can also use it.

For those who feel that the urinal is too large to carry in a handbag, the Pipinette travel kit is easier to use. It consists of a plastic bag that is inserted through a ring for use. The bag contains a small pad made of the same material used in disposable diapers, which absorbs the liquid and transforms it into a solid. After use, the bag is tied shut and discarded.

Hygienic System

In the late 1960's, disposable hand towels were not especially common in public places, institutions or industries. The hygiene company MoLnlycke, today known as SCA, began manufacturing paper hand towels in spoolless rolls for large-scale users. In 1972, these towels began to be sold in a brightly colored, round plastic dispenser equipped with a cutting edge against which the paper was torn off. This was the M-Box, which later developed into Tork, an entirely new hygienic paper system that changed patterns of consumption in the hygiene sector.

Because Tork boxes are intended to fit into various environments, their shape is discrete and timeless, with only one decorative element, a window on the front side of the box, through which the contents can be seen. Two key concepts directed the design of these boxes: maximum hygiene and user friendliness. Edges, buttons and other details of the boxes have been smoothed or rounded so that dirt does not gather upon them. The cutting edge has wavy teeth so that users do not risk scratching their fingers.

Safety Match

Professor Gustaf Erik Pasch received a patent on his safety match in 1844. Previously, matches were made with yellow phosphorus, which was not only poisonous but also dangerous, since matches made with it could be lit by striking them against any surface at all. Pasch replaced the yellow phosphorus with red phosphorus, and also divided the chemical ingredients, so that the phosphorus was on the side of the matchbox. Because these matches could only be lit by striking them against the side of the box, they were safer.

Safety matches have been sold throughout the world for 150 years, in packaging that has hardly changed. When the market for safety matches was being expanded, great efforts were put into creating match brands with pleasing graphic designs that would appeal to the tastes and preferences of different countries. Fiat Lux, Three Stars, and Solstickan are just a few of these international brands of matches. In the minds of consumers, these brand names became synonymous with the products they represented.

Absolut Vodka

Despite its relatively small size, Sweden has produced innumerable inventions. Vodka does not qualify as a Swedish invention; however, conscious design combined with strategic marketing may quickly transform a product into an innovation.

In the 1970's, when the company Vin & Sprit wanted to introduce a new premium vodka into an already crowded market, the graphic design of the packaging became the decisive factor. The final design was adapted from an old Swedish medicine bottle found in an antique store. It's simple, strict, yet elegant shape is a reminder of an era when vodka was sold in pharmacies as a cure for everything from colic to pestilence. After introduction onto the international market, Absolut Vodka's bottle won renown as an excellent example of modern glass design. Its timeless shape, in clear glass and with no labels, is an international success, and has made Absolute one of the bestselling premium vodkas in the world.

Packaging for Non-carbonated Drinks

In 1952, Tetra Pak presented a concept that would contribute to the modernization of grocery retailing and the growth of convenience stores and supermarkets. It was their tetrahedron-shaped container of plastic coated paper for the hygienic distribution of liquid foodstuffs such as milk. The shape was achieved by closing the ends of a paper tube with two pressed seams at right angles to one another. For rapid production, machines were developed that could continually make, fill and seal these containers.

The concept was a commercial success, and was adopted by the Swedish dairy industry. Later development work led to more easily-handled package forms, and in 1963, the brick shaped Tetra Brik package was presented. Since then, the activities of the company have been expanded to include complete systems for processing, packaging and distribution. Today, millions of liters of milk and other non-carbonated drinks are consumed from Tetra Pak containers around the world.

Zipper

Two bands of fabric with metal teeth, and a pull that can join or separate the teeth. This is how a zipper looks today, and has ever since 1914. That was the year Swedish industrialist Gideon Sundback, who had lived in the USA since the beginning of that century, received a patent for the fastening device he had developed in New York. A number of patents had been granted on locking, zippertype fasteners since the 1800's. Many inventors had tried to improve upon them, but it was Sundback who succeeded in solving all of the small problems. The construction and function of the zipper has remained the same ever since. The zipper is a reliable, timeless design that is just as current today as when it was first introduced.

The Thorsman Plug

A Thorsman Plug is a small anchor used to fasten screws into holes that cannot be threaded. When the Thorsman plug was introduced in the 1950's, there were already plugs of aluminum and wood on the market. However, aluminum plugs eventually disintegrated, and wooden plugs tended to dry out or rot. The Thorsman plug, which bears the name of its inventor, Oswald Thorsman, was innovative in two respects. First, it was constructed of plastic, which at that time was a relatively new material, the characteristics of which were still being discovered and developed. Second, the plug expanded outward in two directions when tightened, so that it had a double effect, making it superior to competitive screw anchors.

Three-Point Safety Belt

The three-point safety belt is probably the most effective piece of traffic safety equipment. Regardless of the make or model, today all road vehicles are equipped with three-point safety belts. About ten million kilometers of belting have been installed in cars around the world. A piece of belting this long would circle the globe 250 times! When Nils Bohlin began his research and development on car safety at Volvo in the late 1950's, seat belts were already standard safety equipment. in some cars. However, there was still the risk that a passenger could slide out of the seat belt and be thrown from the vehicle in the event of a frontal collision. The result of Bohlin's work was the three-point belt: one belt over the ribcage and one across the pelvis, anchored to a low point at the side of the seat. This belt was introduced onto the Nordic market in Volvo's passenger cars in 1959. Since then, it has spread around the world.

Retractable Seat Belt

Today, all safety belts are of the retractable type, which was first introduced in 1961 by helicopter mechanic Hans Karlsson. He worked on improving the retractable belt throughout the 1960's. In effectiveness and comfort, it was an excellent improvement over the seatbelts of that era, which hung loosely and were difficult to adjust. The retractable belt fits snugly against the body without pinching, and is self-adjusting, so that it suits all body shapes. Thanks to the retractable belt, the use of seat belts has increased. The double function of the locking roller locks the belt both when the car's speed is reduced quickly, and when the belt is pulled out rapidly.

ระบบป้องกันแรงกระแทกจากด้านข้างหรือเอสไอพีเอสเป็นผลงานการพัฒนาของบริษัทวอลโว่ในช่วงต้นทศวรรษ 1990 เมื่อเกิดการชนด้านข้างหรือเมื่อรถคว่ำระบบจะมีการป้องกันภัย 2 ส่วนด้วยกัน ส่วนแรกคือคานเหล็กกล้าที่วางเป็นแนวขวางบนพื้นรถลดการบาดเจ็บโดยช่วยการกระจายแรงกระแทกออกไปเป็นแนวกว้าง ส่วนที่สองคือถุงลมด้านข้างช่วยป้องกันศีรษะและสีข้างของผู้โดยสารโดยม่านถุงลมจะพองตัวโดยอัตโนมัติป้องกันผู้ขับขี่มิให้บาดเจ็บจากการกระแทกกับหน้าต่างด้านข้างของรถ และป้องกันไม่ให้วัตถุจากด้านนอกทิ่มเข้ามาด้านข้างของตัวรถ

System for Side Impact Protection

The Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) was developed by Volvo in the early 1990's. The system consists of two parts. Steel cross beams in the floor of the car reduce injuries in the event of a side collision by distributing the force of the impact over a greater area of the car. The second part of the system consists of a side air bag that protects the rider's sides and head. The Side Impact Protection System also includes a curtain airbag that inflates automatically. It helps prevent riders from being injured against the side windows of the car, and keeps outside objects from penetrating the sides of the car in a side collision, or when the car overturns.
