Bernard Boutet de Monvel, painter, portraitist, and illustrator, immortalized the glamorous figures of the Cafe Society in Paris, New York, Newport, and Palm Beach. Elegant and seductive, he was a dandy who moved in the highest echelons of society, socializing with Maharajahs and captains of industry. Son of the famous French children's book illustrator Maurice Boutet de Monvel, he left his own body of work that revealed him as a master of geometry and modernity, the painter par excellence of the Art Deco style. The artist started with color etchings, studied sculpture, went on to create illustrations for Harper's Bazaar in the 1920s and '30s, and became best known for his striking and realistic oil portraits of high profile figures.
